December 12, 2023 Be Open To Suggestions

During the support groups I have attended my peers offer suggestions on behaviors I can implement to help manage my mental health. In return, I will offer ideas that I have found beneficial to aid my Recovery.

I woke up Friday morning with a little sore throat. I thought to myself here it comes since I have had the symptoms before. A week before my wife came home from work not feeling well. She developed a cold and cough that knocked her socks off.

I thought I wouldn’t get what my wife has since I take care of my physical health. Well since Friday my sore throat has intensified, and I am experiencing sinus pressure, a mild temperature, and a headache. I decided to go and see a doctor to rule out strep throat. Fortunately, the test came back negative and he said I had Sinusitis.

He said, “Go to a drug store and purchase a Neti Pot (Looks like a teapot) and do it two times per day for the next four days.”

Basically, you take a packet of salt, mix it with distilled water, lean your head over the sink at a 45-degree angle look into the basin, gently insert the spout of the nasal cup into one nostril, allow the water to exit the opposite nostril, and when finished do the same thing with the other nostril.

When the doctor gave me this suggestion I thought to myself, “Another treatment on top of all the other ones I already participate in. My attitude was this probably wouldn’t work, I didn’t want to go to a drug store, and can’t I just get a pill to make it better?

Do you ever find yourself in a similar circumstance when it comes to your mental health? A person gives us a suggestion on how we can manage our mental health condition, addiction, trauma, and general well-being do we at least try it?

When I arrived home after stopping by the pharmacy I immediately did a cleanse with my new friend Neti Pot. Guess what? It works. I will not get into the yellow discharge. However, I know everyone has suffered from a cold at some point in their life and knows what I mean. When a person gives us a suggestion on how to help our mental health symptoms try it may just work.

Peace

Larry
