September 11, 2023 Grandma’s Bread

To what should I compare the subject of Recovery? As a child, I occasionally stayed overnight at my grandmother’s house while my parents were gone on a short trip. Grandma was an excellent baker. I remember waking up, getting dressed, and heading toward the kitchen. The aroma of bread being baked was intoxicating.

Grandma mixed the leaven into the flour along with water and salt. Then she began kneading the dough which was a long and tedious process. The dough was set aside for a period of time so that it could rise signaling it was ready to be baked. Once the baking process was completed Grandma took the loaves from the oven and placed them on a rack to cool. When the bread was cooled Grandma would slice a piece of bread to share with me. She always had homemade jelly which I used to spread on my piece of freshly baked bread. The taste was heavenly.

Recovery requires ingredients for us to manage our symptoms. I need support groups, a therapist, a psychiatrist, writing, family, friends, and God. You may need these or you may benefit from other ingredients. Regardless mixing all these pieces together takes time, and can be a long and tedious process.

The good news is Recovery is possible when we stick with it, it will transform our world and give us gusto. Practicing the ingredients of Recovery will restore our mind, heart, and soul to once again experience pleasure. It will be like sinking our teeth into a freshly baked piece of bread covered in strawberry jelly. Yes, Recovery can be a heavenly experience.

Peace

Larry
