July 31, 2023 Any Day Now – Continued

Friday I wrote about having feelings of self-doubt, uncertainty about my talents and abilities, and a sense of unworthiness that is not congruent with what others think about me. These beliefs are hazardous to my health.

But what if I find myself in a situation where people around me fail to incorporate me into their group or believe I don’t deserve to be successful? Maybe I am the token male in the group, or my editor says, “Men usually don’t express their feelings.” When I experience these situations I may consider seeing a person that can coach me through cultural and group challenges.

When we feel like a fraud, working harder to be perfect will not change our self-image.

These strategies can help us to extinguish our self-doubt and unworthiness:

*Acknowledge our feelings – Talking to a trusted friend or mentor about our uneasiness can help get some external perspective on the situation.

*Build Connections – Don’t try to do everything ourselves. Instead turn to family, friends, and other networks that offer mutual support.

*Challenge Our Doubts – When self-doubt or unworthiness surface in our minds, ask ourselves whether any actual facts support these beliefs.

*Avoid Comparing Ourselves to Others – We have unique abilities. We do not need to excel in every task we attempt.

Being human means being imperfect. Offering ourselves kindness and compassion instead of judgment and self-doubt can help us maintain a healthy view of ourselves and encourage us to pursue self-growth.

    Peace
