September 30, 2026: “Pivoting Toward Growth in Recovery!”

I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.

During our Recovery, we balance healing by working on ourselves and the character defects that can hold us back. The work looks different for each person. It may include mindfulness meditation, learning skills to build healthier relationships, managing our emotions, or changing unhealthy patterns of thinking.

A character defect can be an automatic reaction or deeply rooted habit, such as dishonesty, fear, pettiness, rage, or resentment. These patterns can get in the way of our growth and emotional health. They do not mean we are bad people. Rather, they are often unhelpful ways we learned to cope with life’s challenges.

Character defects are better understood as blind spots than permanent flaws. In Recovery, we can see them as defense mechanisms we developed over time to protect ourselves.

So, how can we make a growth pivot and begin turning these patterns into healthier traits?

Perfectionism → Fear of Failure
Growth pivot: Practice self-compassion and learn to embrace “good enough.”

People-pleasing → Fear of Rejection
Growth pivot: Build healthy boundaries. Saying no to others can be saying yes to our own well-being.

Defensiveness → Pride
Growth pivot: Practice emotional agility and curiosity. When someone corrects us, we can pause and ask, “Is there a seed of truth here that can help me grow?”

If you want to explore other character traits and possible growth pivots, you can search online for “Character Defects and How to Pivot Toward Growth.”

Early in my Recovery, I found it overwhelming to look at my character traits and decide what I needed to work on to heal from mental health challenges and trauma. I was flooded with shame and guilt. I am learning to let go of those inaccurate messages I have carried about myself.

Today, I am discovering that I can choose how I respond to life. Through daily prayer and meditation, I am learning to listen, slow down, and allow the power of Recovery to guide me through each day.

Yes, we may be tempted to focus on what is wrong with us or what we lack. But when we depend on Recovery, we do not have to be trapped by those thoughts. Instead, we can make a gentle pivot toward growth, healing, and hope.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
