I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
Yesterday, we outlined the journey and stages of Recovery. Today, I want to share my lived experience of putting these stages into practice.
First, I increased my knowledge. During the first part of my journey, I sought out therapists, psychiatrists, support groups, family, and friends. Each one helped me understand the thoughts and beliefs that were getting in the way of my healing.
Second, I began to understand the depth of the journey ahead. I entered therapy feeling uncomfortable. I permitted myself to feel. I allowed myself to be vulnerable without guilt or shame. At this stage, I was not trying to solve a problem. Instead, I took time to understand my inner world and what was happening within me.
Third, I began to see my real problem. I started taking action to heal my wounds. Much of this healing came through deepening my spiritual life. This deeply changed me. I began to let go of my anger toward God and release the pain and resentment I had carried toward others in my soul.
Fourth, my world opened up. My view of life became much larger. During the first half of my Recovery, I still had my training wheels on. Then I began to “fall through” the layers of my life and trauma. I discovered my “Real Life,” which included depression, anxiety, and trauma. This sacred process helped me begin to find my soul.
Finally, I returned to where I started, but I was not the same person. I had new gifts and talents to share with others on their Recovery journey. I became a writer and wrote two books. (https://superhumanbeing.net) I now share what I have learned with others through my writing and ministry.
Some days, I have a surplus of emotional and mental energy, with enough left over to give to others. I am concerned about the next generation, not just myself. I want to live in deep time, not just my small time. Deep time allows me to see the past, present, and future as connected.
We are SuperHuman Beings. This does not mean being bold, muscular, rich, famous, talented, or extraordinary for ourselves alone. A SuperHuman Being is someone who “goes the distance” in love, healing, and service.
A true SuperHuman Being lives for something greater than self. We use what we have learned through Recovery to serve the common good.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
