I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
Recovery gives us a beautiful picture. It is like a caring mentor or peer who acts as a good shepherd. They go out to find us when we feel lost. They lift us up and walk with us. They care for us, and we come to know them. They know us too.
At first, it may feel like only mentors or peers can open the gate into Recovery. But that is not quite true.
We all have closed gates inside us. These are places we avoid because we feel afraid. Behind those gates are old hurts, addiction, health struggles, anger, and fear.
A mentor or peer does not walk the journey for us. Instead, they walk with us. They gently support us as we face those closed gates. They help us step through, even when it feels hard. They stay with us as we face our pain. Then they help guide us back into the light.
They remind us, “Do not be afraid.”
In my own life, I have mentors and peers who have helped open these gates. They have supported my Recovery in three important ways.
They walk ahead of me and guide me, especially when I feel lost or full of despair.
They walk beside me, listening with care and without judgment.
They walk behind me, ready to catch me when I fall, lifting me up and helping me move forward.
My mentor has helped me in simple, real ways. He taught me how to manage my money. He listened when I struggled at work. He showed me how to be a better spouse and father.
My peers support my mental, emotional, and spiritual health. They help me feel less alone. With their support, I find the courage to step through the gate. I practice the 12 Steps of Recovery each day.
When we walk through a closed gate, we often discover something surprising. We are not alone.
So here is a gentle question to reflect on:
When you stand before your own gate, are you ready to walk through it with support? And what small step can you take today?
Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
