June 5, 2025 Unifying the Masses!

In moments of a mental health crisis, such as a hospitalization or accessing outpatient services, it is not unusual to see family members, friends, or strangers who would ordinarily not pay attention to each other begin to converse with one another to share shock and distress.

People who barely know each other begin to comfort one another, offering a shoulder to cry on. The crisis creates a sense of unity and a spontaneous outpouring of communal sharing. A moment of crisis can reveal the fundamental truth about the human condition. We are human beings created to show kindness and compassion in the communities of family, church, neighborhood, society, and the world.

Angie lived her entire life with mental health and trauma conditions. Her circle of support was small due to her years of instability. One evening, she was severely depressed. She contacted a crisis hotline to overcome the darkness inside of her. She was able to receive help from a local clinic. Family and friends united around her to offer support in her home. Some family and friends were at odds with one another. They gave her the gift of unity to support her Recovery.

My prayer is for mental health (substance misuse and trauma) unity in our churches, homes, and communities. During our lifetimes, there have been incidents where society has been divided on the issue of mental health. I ask God to heal relational divisions so that support and acceptance of our conditions mirror physical health conditions.
