Recovery teaches us to find balance between serving others and getting what we want or need. We may have been doing for others our entire lives, only to fill a void within ourselves or to be liked.
By asserting ourselves, we may think we are being selfish, or others may say we are selfish. By looking at the facts, we often find the evidence says it is simply not true.
What does asserting ourselves look like? Assertiveness recognizes the dignity of a human being and sets boundaries. For example, “Next time please ask to enter my office”, or “Please don’t ask me again, I’ve already said no”.
Aggression, on the other hand, is when we raise our voice at a person or push a person to get out of our way.
We have needs and wants. By asserting ourselves, we are setting boundaries, taking care of ourselves, and showing love to people.
