February 18, 2025 “Please Help Me!”

One of life’s toughest challenges is having faith in our Recovery process. A woman in Recovery is not in a support group, this does not discourage her from approaching peers. In her desperate need to heal herself, she expresses powerlessness and faith before a peer. She teaches others it’s ok to be helpless before people. We do not need to be afraid to pour our hearts and lives before peers in Recovery and others we trust.

Recovery tells us without connections and relationships we will find healing eludes us. Despite this woman’s heartfelt plea for healing, she is ignored as if she did not exist. Have we had times when we felt no one was listening, where we felt distant from others, our reflections, and our prayers? It is like, “Hello is anyone out there?

No matter who we are we experience the darkness of our struggles. It is from the darkness that we grow in our Recovery journey. Those of us who walk in the darkness of our abandonment have a childlike sense of trust that Recovery will act in its time which cultivates an intense closeness to spiritual graces.

Recovery’s reason for not listening to the woman’s request was that it was not part of Recovery’s plan for her. The woman is not discouraged but meditates by falling on her knees calling on the 12-steps, “Please help me.”

Previously I have written about some of my physical struggles. For over twenty years I have had a digestive disorder. As I continue to age it has become increasingly difficult to manage. The woman I am writing about is a fictitious person I can relate to her struggles. Each evening during our prayer time my wife and I ask God to help heal my tummy. Thus far, I continue to struggle and our prayers go unanswered. I do not believe God is ignoring me. I am learning all things are in God’s time. In the meantime, I ponder on the lessons I can learn about suffering, perseverance, trust, faith, and hope.

What life struggles are you facing?

How do you cope when supporting a person with mental health and substance misuse conditions?

How do you cope when you are someone with mental health and substance misuse conditions?
