Recovery is beyond understanding rules and the 12-steps. Now, it is true that our Recovery has many traditions, such as therapy, support groups, psychiatry, peer support, and a host of other traditions defined by the principles of Recovery. But traditions all point us in the right direction to find healing and love. That is why our Recovery wants us to make connections with each other and not just something to check off an activity on our list.
Recovery cleanses our hearts, spirits, and relationships with others. We then take these ingredients into our daily activities to polish our souls. It’s easy when we participate in the Recovery traditions and our peers are nonjudgmental, kind, trusting, and loving. It is a far different task to go back to our families, friends, employers, schools, and other social activities we participate in our communities.
Recovery teaches us to tell our brothers and sisters, “In words and deeds may we find peace in healing.” This is what we are asked to do to be clear, that open, and that loving, so every morning when we get up we say, “Recovery what are we going to do today.”
