There was a teacher who taught psychology classes at a University. One day, a student asked the teacher, “Do you support people taking medication, or do they suffer from a lack of spirituality in their lives?” This question always seemed to the teacher to be a sign of the immaturity of a young student with good intentions trying to understand the goodness of Recovery.
The teacher responded, “I don’t know what you mean by that. If it means you hold to everything Recovery teaches, do you believe in therapy, psychiatry, support groups, and all the teaching throughout the ages, ‘Yes’. What that makes me is not supporting people to take medication or hold a belief their condition is due to a lack of spirituality. However, it makes me one thing: a person willing to meet Recoverees where they are and support the healing process.”
The teacher says, “When people are working with a Recoveree very plainly divided on what support is necessary, Recovery is bound to fail.” This is true about a divided church, country, or family. The funny thing is we know this from the inner core of our being and yet we allow it to exist more so than ever we live in divided times.
When we are told what to do and what is best for us it does little to build us up nor does it allow us to have a say in our treatment. When supporting a Recoveree Why do we not ensure their voice is heard? Would we let this happen in our lives?
There is strength in unity and listening to us so we can feel empowered to care for ourselves. We will not lose our identity in unity. We remain a mosaic of a support team with gifts and talents that come together to form a spiritual peace of art.
