January 27, 2025 The Common Heart!

Calling and conversion—where does that happen? Recovery reminds us that we are ” right where we are,” in the middle of everything we do daily in our homes and communities, not always at a retreat or mountain top. This is healing news for us.

Recovery moments are calling us today, and that change feeds us. First, many of us are common folks, such as retired teachers, parents, social workers, faith-based workers, welders, manufacturing workers, dentists, doctors, and other roles. President Lincoln once said, “God must love the common people because he made so many of them.”

We are not summoned in gigantic ways but in small ways. For some of us, our recovery stories are exactly that: a moment, a stirring, an affirmation while we do what Recovery asks us to do. They come from the heart, not our intellect; they are gut reactions. Our willingness to change is right now rather than telling ourselves, “Give me a month to think it over”. Recovery does not offer us a contract or a desire to negotiate.

We are asked to go with whatever touches our hearts. Recovery asks us to search for those moments. We are offered to live, love, and ingest the 12 steps of Recovery. We all have a task of healing we don’t always know exactly what it is all the time, because it changes from time to time. Five years ago my heart was stirred to begin a Peer Support Group. When this came to me, there was little fanfare and bottle rockets did not explode around me. The group helps me stay on track with my Recovery, it allows me to share what’s in my heart with those who attend each week. https://superhumanbeing.net/thursday-zoom-event/

We are summoned to listen to the healing heart which is a faint whisper. Look over our shoulders today. Maybe there is no need to go to the mountaintop or a retreat, no the quiet inner voice is where the heart tells us, “Come follow me”.
