December 11, 2024 Muscle Memory!

How do we communicate our beliefs? Our priorities? Our personality? What is important for us? Are they worthy, healing, and healthy? Enough to claim what we are doing to be the best version of ourselves? We hear the importance of one’s conduct, one’s actions, and accountability. Develop our muscle memory in such a way that we are conducting ourselves in a way that stands firm in Recovery.

What does this mean? Our actions tell us who we are and to whom we belong. Are we setting the best example for our children and the people around us? Are we leading by example and compassion? Do we nurture and build bridges? Do we reach out and offer possibilities of hope and joy? Our Higher Power (God) expects this from us.

My college basketball coach had a tremendous impact on me. I remember him as a career teacher. In the late afternoon during basketball season, we were required to run two miles to prepare for the upcoming season. He joined us on our runs to connect with us. He always carried himself with pride and purpose and he would share words of wisdom like God first, and don’t burn bridges because the fleet is small. He knew it was all about relationships and because of him, I learned what it takes to be a man.

I witnessed his silent strength as he participated in bible studies and other religious activities. I learned how to love a woman because I saw how he treated his wife, his children, his friends, his players, and others. I witnessed him sharing with those in need. He was a man whose conduct spoke louder than words.

Let’s take time today to thank the people in our lives, living or those who have passed away. People who have shaped to help us. Help create our muscle memory of good health and strive to become the best version of ourselves. My coach helped me to understand that I am doing what I do not because I have to but because it is who I am.

A father once said to his son, “Stay the course in life, keep the faith, count your blessings knowing that we are loved, and yes may my coach rest in peace and thank you.
