Due to the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday, no blogs will be available on November 28th & 29th. There will be no Peer Support Groups on November 28th and December 5th. Our next support group will be on December 12th.
I completed reading a book by Rick Rubin titled, “The Creative Act”. The book does not necessarily have chapters. However, he classifies his writing into 78 Areas of Thought. Here is a little favor of the themes he has created to organize his writing; Everyone Is a Creator, Awareness, Self-Doubt, Listening, Habits, Greatness, Expect a Surprise, Openness, Shades and Degrees, Play, Let It Be, and Harmony.
Rubin begins with the first section, “Everyone Is a Creator”. He says, “Creativity is not a rare ability. It is not difficult to access. Creativity is a fundamental aspect of being human. It’s our birthright. And it is for all of us. Creativity doesn’t exclusively relate to making art. We all engage in this act on a daily basis. To create is to bring something into existence that wasn’t there before”.
Recovery and healing is a creative act. Each one of us has variations in our Recovery plan. For instance, I tap into my creativity through writing. I serve us by facilitating a support group https://superhumanbeing.net/thursday-zoom-event/ and a daily blog.
What does it mean to be a Recoveree today? We can adopt some of Rick Rubin’s Areas of Thought. Meaning we can read his work and implement his suggestions. This can be done in communion with others and ourselves bringing stability to our daily practice.
Our journey is not chaotic and has a community aspect to it. It is from within stability rises and from there we can raise up a healing fellowship. Creativity in Recovery reminds us in these contemporary times we might need to think about how we heal in a modern society. The best way to do this is by listening to others who have gone before us on the road to Recovery.
How did they do this so effectively in Recovery circles? By making people aware there is something greater themselves in the universe and creatively engaging with a foundation of people from different ethnicities, sexual orientations, and several different languages. All were welcome to experience a mind, body, and spiritual renewal.
I try to reach out to a broader Recovery community to ensure our activities represent society. Recovery looks like people who are different but come and share a common theme of hope, healing, and health. How do I do this? Tell people about our support group, blog, and book https://superhumanbeing.net/
In Rubin’s book, he references a comment by Robert Henri, “The object isn’t to make art, it’s to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable”. We are all creative and can use this to heal. Being perfect is to be imperfect, we cannot become more creative than this.
