November 22, 2024 Writing Heals!

Ignatius was born in 1900. He was a person with lived experience due to depression, anxiety, and substance misuse. He became a Peer Specialist and learned the meaning of the 12 Recovery steps from a mentor named Paul.

Ignatius loved to write and pursued becoming an author. He wrote a book about his struggles and joys with depression, anxiety, and substance misuse. He provides important insights into healing during the early half of the twentieth century. He speaks of making connections with people in Recovery, learning to practice mindfulness to reduce anxiety, and the role people can have in supporting those with mental health and substance misuse conditions.

Ignatius wrote, “The 12 steps counsel us to live their meaning deeply. The steps reveal the dignity and devotion of the human spirit. They also emphasize unity within Recovery through the celebration of practicing a step”.

Ignatius referred to himself as an imperfect human being and was convinced the steps were inside of him. He longed for healing so he could help other people in Recovery. He was discouraged by people outside of Recovery who said to him, “This is as good as it will get for your Recovery. You need to accept that”.

He refused to let this stop him from growing. He started a Peer Support Group to connect with others in Recovery. This allowed him to meet with, share, and encourage Recoverees through his writing.

Through Ignatius may we live our faith in Recovery with passion and conviction.

***I have been asked when I would write and publish another book. I am writing a book that will have 365 daily meditations as a companion to my book, SuperHuman Being. https://superhumanbeing.net/ Additionally, I am writing a self-help workbook for those of us in Recovery and for Peer Specialists to use with peers they are working with. I anticipate these books will come out sometime in 2025 or early in 2026.
