Today we will focus on Steps-#8 and #11 (see below). Once upon a time, I faced a dark night of the soul when depression and anxiety paralyzed me. My behavior had an impact on my wife and children. This bothered me and caused shame and guilt as I navigated my Recovery to find healing.
My support system reminded me to have the courage to heal through prayer, reflection, mindfulness, and when necessary seeking professional help. This simple but striking direction brought me to my knees so I will always be a man of prayer and mindfulness.
Recovery is a daily transformation and a recognition of our shortcomings keys to the growth of the spiritual life. Recovery is not scolding us but inviting us to reconcile or thank people for their support as a result of relapse or mental health condition. Eventually, when I Recovered from my mental health episode I thanked my wife and children for their support and love.
When I receive support from people they invite me into friendship with them. The first step to friendship is on the path of Recovery and a transformation of my heart and soul. In prayer and mindfulness, I can cultivate a heart that listens to the Higher Power (for me God). It is on my knees I can grow in friendship with the Higher Power and learn to imitate his example. From the fountain of reflection, prayer, and mindfulness comes the good works of mercy, being the best version of myself, and service to the mission of Recovery.
If we want to renew our commitment to Recovery, take time each day to pray, reflect, practice mindfulness, and seek professional support. Amid our busy schedules and responsibilities, setting aside time for reflection is not easy. Reflection can stimulate healing and Recovery so it becomes a living and active presence in our lives.
Step-#8 We acknowledge our behaviors have impacted our relationships. We list those affected by our behavior and whenever possible become willing to reconcile or thank them for their support during a relapse or mental health crisis.
Step #11 We recognize our shortcomings during recovery, while discovering our Higher Power is the source of our strength and mercy, we learn to rely on our Higher Power for the courage to heal through prayer, reflection, mindfulness, and when necessary seek professional support.
