Each week on Thursday evenings I facilitate a Peer Support Group. Personally, for me, it is a special celebration. I want to explain why. I respect history so I need to explain the historical context as well as the spiritual connection. Developed in the 1930s the 12-step program is an intervention that provides a supportive social network and fosters bonding among group members, which adds to the benefits. Members often run the groups without the involvement of healthcare professionals. The bonding among group members is a factor that underlies the program’s effectiveness. Bonding leads to the provision of role models for attaining healing and fosters goal-directedness.
Now what do we have spiritually? It is all connected. We have the opportunity as Recoverees to connect and unite with healing. We form this bond of human beings in that regard. But there is something deeper going on when we connect with other Recoverees. What do we know about that connection? Yes, it brings pain and suffering but it also brings hope, new life, love, and empowerment. This is how we are to live “warts and all”.
For many of us, we will be in Recovery forever. When we are united by membership in a group or other means of making a connection with people we bring hope and we bring a little bit of healing to our lives and the world around us. We don’t need to bear our healing alone, we have each other and our Higher Power (God) to share in suffering but want to grow into the best version of ourselves.
