What is the reason for recognizing Labor Day? “The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize workers’ many contributions to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. An annual day of celebration of the achievements of workers. It originates in the labor union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. – google.com
Healing brings peace but a decision must be made here not just a blind walk through life. When we live with purpose and drive it is fueled by our work ethic. Living the 12 steps with boldness is counter-culture but is meant to be deliberate by deciding to live them.
Like the worker movement in the 1800’s, it is not easy to achieve healing but we have a choice each day to take a stand for Recovery in our actions and our love for ourselves and other people. It is not easy yet if we want peace we work for what we deserve.
The following prayer by St. Bonaventure is fitting for this Labor Day and for those of us with a mental health condition, addiction, and trauma as well as people who support us. “Lord Jesus grant our souls hunger after thee. May we thirst for wisdom and knowledge in all we do. May we live for the prayer and glory of thy name. You are our pleasure, joy, rest, delight, food, refuge, help, and treasurer. In you may we be ever fixed and rooted firm and unmovable”.
May the intercession of St. Bonaventure bring true and everlasting peace to us all.
