The truth of the 12 steps is our faith, never mathematical or scientific certainties. At times, even for a minute doubt flirts across our mind. When I began Recovery I was obsessed with finding the best strategies, approaches, and ingredients to heal. I found some evidence-based techniques such as; cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness. People who have shared their journey with me utilize these approaches to help their Recovery.
Despite using these evidence-based techniques each of us has a different experience. Some of us found relief and others had no relief at all. Regardless of where we sit it is vital to have faith and hope that we will see what works for us. Recovery for each of us is unique and what works for one person may not work for us. Let’s say we have a headache mathematically and scientifically know what works. We can take a pill and it usually goes away rather quickly. The circumstances for Recovery are different. There rarely is one antidote to manage the symptoms of Recovery and learn to embrace all that life has to offer.
Don’t panic because doubt comes. Faith does not come from outside of us. It comes from the 12 steps. It comes from our Higher Power. The Higher Power’s gift of Recovery never wears out. We need our faith to strengthen us when we experience desert moments. We can talk to our Higher Power about it. These beliefs are mathematical and scientific certainties.
Peace
Larry
